An ethnic group is determined based on someone's race or racial admixture, language, religion, homeland, culture (music, Food, clothing, norms, values, etc), origin myth, & shared history.

Different ethnic groups have formed throughout history, in the Americas, New ethnic groups formed during & after colonization, such as the Brazilian Pardos, the Hispanos of the Southwestern United States, the Mexican Mestizos, the French-Canadians, the African-Americans, the Criollos, the Old-Stock Americans or White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, the Cajuns, the Garifuna, the Ladinos of Central America, the Belizean Creoles, the Afro-Caribbeans, the Pennsylvania Dutch, & many others.

In the United States, there's two ethnic groups in the Census, Hispanic or Latino (those with origins to Spain & Latin America) & Non-Hispanic or Latino, there's been a purposals to add a new ethnic group to the Census, Middle Eastern & North African (MENA), but it was cancelled by the Trump administration in 2020.
