Long before Genesis existed, the Sumerians recorded a different creation story. The Atrahasis Epic, carved into clay around 1800 BCE, describes two gods named Enki and Ninmah performing an act of creation. They took clay from the earth and mixed it with the blood of a sacrificed god named Kingu. This wasn't spiritual metaphor. It was presented as a manufacturing process. A biological procedure.
The location they named was Edin—a plain between the Tigris and Euphrates in southern Mesopotamia. Thousands of years later, when Genesis was written, that word migrated directly into Hebrew scripture. Eden. The identical narrative structure followed: a paradise, a serpent, a forbidden plant that granted immortality. All of it.
But the Sumerians had already written this story in Dilmun, their own account of a perfect garden. That text predates the Bible by over 1,500 years. The serpent. The forbidden fruit. The loss of immortality. Every element.
The question isn't whether the Bible borrowed from Sumerian sources. The archaeological record confirms it did. The question is why we're taught these are separate traditions, when one is simply a much later adaptation of the other.
