Palma thinks green with ecological corridors to oxygenate the city

The new General Plan of Palma includes in its proposal four new large green areas that, if approved, will oxygenate the city and allow it to have several ecological corridors that will cross it from the suburbs to the sea. The idea of the project, in line with European regulations, is to set up a network of parks or green spaces that will connect the different parts of the city centre by taking advantage of newly built areas, which will have to be adapted to the regulations, or by using the banks of streams.
The document proposes the creation of a large green area between the Son Moix stadium and Son Ximelis called Son Roca corridor. This land is partly developable but future developments will have to respect an ecological strip that will eventually end, associated with the torrent of sa Riera and the so-called Falca Verda.
The second major proposal of the Plan foresees another large linear park taking advantage of the banks of the Torrent Gros, from the boundary between Palma and Marratxí to the sea. The current Plan, which dates from 1998, allows the construction of buildings near the torrents, but with the new regulations this will be prohibited as it will be declared as undevelopable. "The idea is to avoid the overflows that construction in or near the torrents can create and, at the same time, to recover resources since, in case of heavy rains, the water will filter through these reforested areas and reach the aquifers," says Gabriel Horrach, general director of Urban Planning at Palma town hall.
The banks of the Torrent Gros will become a linear park.
The third large natural area planned will be located in the Vivero area, in Son Ametler, where a space will be created that will end up linked to the Torrent Gros corridor mentioned above.
Finally, in the Llevant area, an ecological corridor will be created next to Son Güells and the Torrent de na Bàrbara which, like the others, aims to increase the environmental value of the district by taking advantage of the new constructions to link the parks that will be created. "With this urban planning the future developments that are made will allow us to move from isolated green areas to green areas connected between them," Horrach assures.
The general director of Urban planning explains the philosophy of the General Plan, the concept of 'Environmental Justice' that guarantees access to green areas to all neighbourhoods of the municipality, he points out the importance of the urban green connectors, streets with sufficient width, he speaks of 20 meters, which will link with the large green corridors and create an ecological structure in the form of a spider web over the city. Another advantage of these connectors is that they will reduce dependence on private vehicles as they will be formed by landscaped spaces and streets for pedestrians and bicycles

La Violeta acoge la parte de la exposición centada en Mallorca, con grandes fotografías de "Potti" y con textos e imágines históricas sobre la tradición. While the United States and parts of Canada enjoyed the first total solar eclipse to darken the continent in seven years on Monday, don’t worry, parts of Europe are in for a treat in 2026 and Mallorca, according to astronomers, is going to be one of the best places in Western Europe to watch it on August 12.
It was first total eclipse to sweep across a large swath of North America since 2017, and will be the last one visible from the contiguous United States until 2044.

La Reserva Puig de Galatzó is like an adventure park for both adults and kids offering not only a nature reserve but also activities like zip wires, climbing or a Tibetan bridge plus lots of animals.
You can find it on the slopes of Puig de Galatzó, near the village of Puigpunyent. Inside the park, you will be able to refresh in pools with waterfalls, take part in adventure activities, enjoy the longest zip line in Mallorca or just walk around in the evergreen forests.
La Reserva del Galatzo is a wildlife refuge, where wild birds of prey such as eagles, vultures and hawks live. Their wildlife rehabilitation project, hosting animals suffering from physical problems that could not be reintroduced in their habitat, hosts bears, emus, martens, goats, peacocks, donkeys and more.
A 3.5km trail of waymarked paths leads you through Mallorca's mountain scenery in less than two hours, past the waterfalls and springs of Ses Fonts d’es Ratxo, olive trees and charcoal stoves. A series of boards provides background information on wildlife and mountain industries.
There are also plenty of adventure activities on offer including three zip wires, a Tibetan bridge and a climbing wall. A snack bar offers drinks and food and there is also a picnic area with public grills.
The park is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 from April and October, and on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 from November to March.

Cyclists, and cycling, are rather like Marmite, you either like them or hate them, but whatever your attitude towards Lycra, cycling is big business for Mallorca and this year is expected to be a boom season.
A substantial number of hotels have opened much earlier than usual and many are fully equipped to care for cyclists with on-site mechanics, workshops, cycle storage, coaches and trainers, spas, wellness facilities, sports massage therapists, guides plus special transport services for those wishing to cycle further afield, equipment shops, rental outlets and food and nutritional options for those who need to keep their strength up.
This week, for example, the area around Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia and Sa Pobla, was a hive of activity with cycling teams and clubs from all over the world enjoying what has been a few glorious days, despite the snow capping the mountains.
One group of British cyclists from Dulwich on the island for a week told me that the conditions were perfect - clear blue skies, relatively mild temperatures for northern Europeans and excellent services in the hotel and out on the roads, with more and more restaurants and bars catering for cyclists.
And it is not just the north and northeast of the island which is benefiting greatly from cycle tourism, which enables hotels to open much earlier than usual as part of the Winter in Mallorca campaign launched by the Council of Mallorca.
The cycle tourism season covers two very specific periods, from autumn to Christmas and from February until after Easter and, come the end of the cycling season this year, over 200,000 cyclists are expected to have come to Mallorca according to hoteliers, specialised tour operators and the Council of Mallorca.
The overall economic impact on the island during their stay, for all the services they consume, will reach 300 million euros from October to the end of April this year.
The director of the PortBlue Club Pollentia Resort & Spa, located on the sea front between Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia, Bernardo Dahlhaus, told the Bulletin that the hotel, which opened on February 27, is already seeing clear indications that this season is going to be a good one.
“This year, the cycling teams and clubs are flooding back. Right now, occupancy is higher than we expected and 70 percent are cycling teams. And while the vast majority are from the UK and northern Europe, we have a team from Brazil; this is the fourth time they’ve been based with us with their coaches and trainers.
“Yes, it’s big money, it’s top-end tourism and we’re used by some of the best clubs and amateur teams in the world, not to mention athletes, hikers and birdwatchers we attract as well as family tourism.
“But I think we can talk about a cycling boom this season. Cycling camps have been set up and the feedback is extremely positive.
“I think the big attraction for cyclists is that Mallorca offers a diverse range of opportunities. There are short or long routes plus we have the Tramuntana, which offers some of the most exciting and demanding cycle routes in Europe in a spectacular environment. Cyclists know they can head out to pretty much anywhere on the island and be back in the hotel at the end of the day and that goes for nearly all of the hotels which specialise in cycling across the island.

Apart from the more general market, there are groups of cycle tourists who choose to stay in five-star hotels “because they are looking for maximum comfort and to be able to enjoy their hobby in a different way, which benefits restaurants, car rental companies, fashion shops and complementary offers”, according to cycle camp organisers.
“There is a wide diversity of businesses that depend on the arrival of European cycle tourists to remain active and open practically twelve months of the year,” say hoteliers.
But a great deal of time and money has been invested in establishing Mallorca as one of the top cycle destinations in Europe, if not the world, due to its close proximity to so many cycling countries in Europe.
Back in 2015, Sir Bradley Wiggins helped promote sports tourism at the Balearics stand at the World Travel Market. He gave his full backing to Mallorca as a cycling destination. For him, the Tour of Mallorca (Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca) cycle race was “fantastic” - it has become one of the first major races of the season, especially on the European tour.
Wiggins was accompanied by Ireland’s Sean Kelly, one of the greats of road cycling in the 1980s, who, though he retired in 1994, still comes to Mallorca at least three times a year as do tens of thousands of cyclists from across the world
And it is not just road cycling. The Palma Arena velodrome is also a hive of activity when the professional teams are on the island because some team members need indoor fast track training; the velodrome provides just that.
So the infrastructure of excellent roads, an increasing number of which are being adapted for cyclists, and the opportunity of being able to train in the velodrome make Mallorca a cyclists’ paradise, something which the airlines have also got a hold of and provide special services for those traveling with their bikes, some of which cost more than a performance car.

The idea is ultimately for the forest to be a corridor that links the center of the city with Establiments and on to the Tramuntana and which will also unite neighbourhoods cut off by the Riera torrent.
