They found 750 more bodies this week. Canada Day celebrations across the country are cancelled this year as a result.
I know this may sound like superficial, performative, and useless, not to mention would probably stir up a huge culture war, but I actually wrote to my local MP about revising the national anthem. There is actually a line in the French version about conquering the land with a sword in one hand and a cross in the other. This could reasonably be interpreted as a reference to the forced conversion of indigenous people, so I'm thinking in light of these discoveries, maybe that line has got to go. I mean, even if everything else was made right, reparations were paid, the Pope apologizes, etc., IMO that would be all for naught if our national anthem still condones such behaviour, right?
I dunno, I wanna do SOMETHING, but I don't have the knowledge, skills, nor actual political power that could really help, but I guess I can do what I can. And talking to older white people in my family, who were alive when the schools were open, I actually feel bad for them too because the government did this under their noses, they had no idea and they're rightfully horrified. Obviously, that was by design, though, because no sane person would let that continue if they knew. But still I actually kind feel bad for them. Could you really call them complicit at that point?
And well, the Montreal Canadiens are in the Stanley Cup Finals. Their goalie is from the community where the 215 bodies were found and his mom was recently reelected chief. I obviously want Montreal to win because I am a lifelong Habs fan, sure but I also want them to win because of that.
