How Can People Guess Such Different Origins Based on the Same Person's Appearance? 🤔

I've been noticing something interesting during my trip to Italy. Different people have made completely different assumptions about where I'm from based on my appearance.

For example, one Italian guy in Rome asked me if I spoke Portuguese. I assume he thought I was Brazilian. 😂 In Naples, another guy asked if I was from South America. I told him I'm Mexican American. 😅 Usually, when people in Italy ask about my background, they ask if I'm Latino.

But here's where it gets interesting: at the hostel I'm staying at now, someone I think might be Pakistani asked me if I was from China! 😂 I said no I’m From United States 🇺🇸
I've also told some Filipino people I've met that I'm Mexican American with mixed Filipino ancestry. I even asked one guy if he could tell I had Filipino ancestry just by looking at me. He said no and thought I might have only around 10% Filipino ancestry based on DNA. Obviously, you can't accurately estimate someone's ancestry percentage just by looking at them, but I found his response interesting.

That's quite a difference in perception. One person apparently associated my appearance with Portuguese speaker like Brazilian, another with South America in general with no country mention just South American, while someone else thought I might be Chinese. Usually, the guesses I get fall somewhere within the Latin American or South American realm, so the China question caught me off guard!

It got me thinking about how people's cultural backgrounds, personal experiences, and familiarity with different populations might influence how they perceive someone's appearance.

Obviously, you can't reliably determine someone's nationality or ethnicity just by looking at them, but I'm curious about other people's experiences.

Have you ever had people from different backgrounds guess completely different origins for you? And why do you think people can have such different perceptions of the same person's appearance?

Most people have guessed I’m Latino from somewhere 😀, but China was definitely the most extreme guess I’ve gotten so far 😅😂 Nothing wrong with that, though! The biggest surprise would be if someone guessed I was from Africa (a sub-Saharan African country), but so far, that’s the only guess I haven’t gotten (not counting trolls 😂).

What do you think? 😂 While in Italy, one Italian used a translator on his phone to tell me about the train station and pickpockets, and he asked if I spoke Portuguese. I assume he thought I was Brazilian lol. I told him I speak English, Spanish, and a little Italian (I’m still A1/beginner level 😂). Others asked if I was Latino or South American when asking where I’m from. But just a few days ago, a Pakistani guy, or someone of that background, asked where I was from and immediately guessed China! 😅 I told him I’m from the United States and left it at that lol.

The most common comment I’ve gotten in my life is that I look partly Chinese because of my eyes. But yea I even asked a Filipino roommate in Rome, if he could tell I had Filipino ancestry after I told him I’m Mexican American with some Filipino ancestry. He said, “Oh, nice! I’m Filipino too!” 😂 But when I asked if I looked Filipino, he said not really and guessed I was probably only around 10% Filipino based on my appearance. He never told me what he thought I looked like, though. He had lighter skin, wavy hair, and eyes that weren’t particularly narrow, and he seemed to have some Spanish ancestry himself.

Anyway, I told him that some people had guessed I was partly Chinese before, and he was like, “Really?” 😂 He suggested it might be because I’m beardless. 😅

in my opinion you dont look chinese lol

you look latin american

by the way south asians are not to be taken seriously with their guesses or how they place people . they will often pass many people who they view as desirable looking in their fucking south asian places even though they dont pass . and they will say "but muh diversity . south asia is diverse n shiet" to justify it . i remember on anthroscape years ago when i was new and asked where i pass there was a pakistani guy who said i look Turkish , Cypriot , Georgian or something and then after he knew i am Kurdish he said i look Balochi . you got to be fucking kidding me ....never take curries seriously

😂 I agree with you, bro. Honestly, I don’t think I look Chinese either lol. Latin American is definitely one of the most common guesses I get. The funniest part is how people can look at the same person and come up with completely different origins. 🤣

And yeah, I get what you mean about people’s guesses sometimes being influenced by their own perceptions of who looks like they belong to certain populations. Most of the guesses I got during my trip to Italy were within a relatively normal range, but that South Asian guess was wild! 😂💀
At this point, I’m not taking South Asians seriously again unless we’re talking about Tekken, the fighting game 🤣🤣🎮 The Pakistani players at least are among the best in the world, right up there with the Koreans! 😂
