It's relative, people have biased perceptions. For e.g many MENAs will say Pakistanis and Sri Lankans look the same because we're so brown they can't tell the difference even if a Pakistani on average passes better in Bahrain than in Sri Lanka.

Turks pass better in south europe than the Arabian gulf but to southern europeans, Turkey is just another Middle eastern Muslim country so that colors their bias.

yes but thats not the reason in his case . it rather seems that he saw many gypsies and other non native people in istanbul . cant explain otherwise . i am not lighter nor more european looking than the average turk or kurd

it is very weird what he said

There are too many Arabs, south asians and Afghans in Istanbul Fatih. He thought that the people there were Turks or Kurds.

Some people say that just to get reaction or to "humble" you, a lot of Europeans don't like Turks so that's why he wasn't being sincere.

istanbul is full of gypsies , many refugees from afghanistan and syria too , many tourists from all kind of places etc
i know about Istanbul gypsies since you have posted pics of them and a video about gypsy neighborhood of istanbul

syrians are not even that exotic though. referring to those syrians who score like the following modeling

34.4% Anatolian Neolithic Farmer

26% Zagros Neolithic Farmer

17.8% Caucasus Hunter Gatherer

17.4% Natufian Hunter Gatherer

4.4% EHG

Most Syrians in Turkey do not have this genetic profile, there are also Syrians with Mesopotamian+Bedouin+10% SSA ancestry.

there are of course such exotic syrians but the results i posted above belong to an alawite person who are considered to be west/north syrians.. so they are not that exotic to begin with and if syrians such as this person make up the majority of istanbul's syrian population then it probably would not be fair to attribute some odd looking people's woginess in the city to them imo

would not ve surprised if that were the case. i bet gypsies would even larp as scandos if they could. probably some of them who live in scandinavia do
