26-year-old woman from Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation killed Thursday in northwestern New Brunswick
An independent investigation of a police officer's actions leading up to the shooting death of Chantel Moore early Thursday in New Brunswick could take months to complete as First Nations leaders and federal ministers call for answers.
Eight investigators with Quebec's independent police watchdog group are investigating her death in Edmundston.
Moore, a 26-year-old woman from Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in British Columbia, was shot as police were carrying out a wellness check.
Police in the northwestern New Brunswick city say Moore ran out of her apartment onto a balcony with a knife, threatening the officer, who then shot her.
In a news release, Quebec's Independent Investigations Office said it will determine if the information released by police is correct.

Really sad to hear what has happened to her, and she is not the first case of indigenous people being murdered by the police in Canada from what I have been told. Even if she did have a knife, why didn't the officers shoot one of her leg? Why would they try to shoot her in an area where they know that the chances of her dying are high? She was not carrying a gun, therefore, their life was not threaten by people who carry GUNS.
Stories against Natives anger me so much because they have been abused for HUNDREDS of years and we have all stayed quiet, but we are quick to be so vocal and claim having Native American ancestry, we want to claim that small percentage yet not be the voice of what these people deserve and need. Enough is enough, they need to stop murdering and abusing Native Americans, whether they are from Canada, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Argentina, Chile etc. we need to stand up against the injustice they are going through at the moment and we should built a better world for them, because at the end of the day, we put them in that horrible condition and environment
