According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, Mexico recognizes two ethno-racial categories.
  1. Indigenas (Mexicans who are over 80% Amerindian, & culturally Indigenous)
  2. Afromexicanos (Mexicans with visible African features, & usually at least genetically 10% Sub-Saharan African).

In addition to the two legal ethno-racial categories, there a few other social Ethno-Racial categories.
  1. Gueros or Rubios (Whites & Euromestizos with lighter features).
  2. Americanos (Non-Hispanic White Americans)
  3. Gitanos or "Hungaros" (Romani people).
  4. Chinos or Orientales (Asians)
  5. Indios or "Apaches" (Native Americans from the US & Canada)
  6. Negros (mainly African-Americans)
  7. Mestizos (a mix of races, especially those of mixed White & American Indian heritage)
The rest of the population is simply considered "Mexicanos".
